Lactic acid bacteria increase the resistance of turbot larvae, Scophthalmus maximus, against pathogenic vibrio

چکیده
Résumé Characteristics of Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) isolated from rotifers, ~rachionus plicutilis, resembled those of Lactobacillus plantarum or Carnobacteriurn sp. It was investigated whether the artificial maintenance of a high concentration of LAB in rotifers might increase their dietary value for turbot larvae, particularly when the fish were infected with pathogenic Vibrio sp. One LAB strain was cultivated, then introduced daily into the enrichment medium of rotifers. In this way, LAB were retrieved in large amounts in turbot, and a significant limitation of larval morkality rate was obsemed when turbot were challenged with pathogenic vibrio at day 9. The inoculum concentration of LAB had a decisive effect on survival rate, and the optimum was between IO7 and 2 x IO7 Colony Forming Units (CFU) daily added per ml of the enrichment medium (53 % sumival rate after 72 h of challenge, versus 8 % for the infected control group without LAB).

Evaluation of immunomodulatory effects of lactic acid bacteria in turbot (Scophthalmus maximus).
In the present work, the effects of several lactic acid bacteria on the immune response of turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) macrophages have been studied both in vitro and in vivo. Out of six lactic acid bacterial strains tested, only heat-killed Lactococcus lactis significantly increased the turbot head kidney macrophage chemiluminescent (CL) response after 24 h of incubation. Nitric oxide (NO) w...

متن کاملAntigenic characterization of Enterococcus strains pathogenic for turbot and their relationship with other Gram-positive bacteria
We describe here the serological and antigenic characterization of a group of highly virulent Enterococcus strains that, since 1993, have caused heavy economic losses in turbot Scophthalmus maximus reared in northern and northwestern Spain. Reference Gram-positive strains and the corresponding polyclonal antisera raised against some species of lactic acid bacteria as well as Corynebacterium aqu...
متن کاملPathogenicity of vibrio splendidus strains associated with turbot larvae, scophthalmus maximus
Turbot larvae were challenged with eight strains of Vibrio splendidus isolated from diseased larvae, plus a ninth strain pathogenic to scallop larvae (A515; Nicolas et al. 1996). Six strains caused heavy mortality but the scallop pathogen and the other two strains did not. All the strains shared a large number of phenotypic traits, and an attempt was made to relate virulence to genotype and phe...
